Haitian Student Organization's Unity Day
The Haitian Student Organization (HSO) at the University of Miami is hosting its annual "Unity Day" on October 25, 2008. This event swill at place at the UC patio at the coral gables campus of the University of Miami. Unity Day is a massive affair of culture and community enlightenment under a unifying theme that affects the Haitian community. Not only does this event encompass the University of Miami community, but all communities that extend beyond the greater Coral Gables area. This year we will be hosting Unity Day on Saturday, October 25, 2008. In continuing this tradition we are happy to present to you with this year's theme of "Island of Beauty, Island of Strength.", where we will show beautyof our mother country and demonstrate Haiti's theme "L'union fait la force". The program will run from 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m.
The main objectives of Unity Day this year will be: To highlight numerous aspects of the Haitian culture, to detract negative stereotypes placed upon the Haitian people, to serve as a networking tool for the student body, to raise money for our Haitian Relief Project, which will benefit Haiti's hurricane victims. This year it will be hosted by Coulgi who is first Hip-Hop creole artist to perform on a national Television. This year's event will give local Haitian artists will have a chance to display their paintings/sculptures and expose the community to their talent. At the same time, prominent organizations of the Haitian community will be tabling and passing out information. This is an excellent way to network with Haitian companies all over Miami.
In addition, we will have prominent guest speakers who will speak on the progress of Haiti and how they as Haitians have extended this progress to South Florida. For the poetry lovers, there will be spoken word by Makendel, one of the members of the spoken word group the Maroons. Local musicians will also be there to grace us with their talent. Not to forget Haiti's great accomplishments, there will be an educational display that demonstrates some of the great work that we have done.
After a whole day of cultural enlightenment, guests have an opportunity to relax enjoy our performance section which features the famous artists T Vice. Because we will be raising money and supplies for Haiti's hurricane victims, admission will be $5 for students with ID and $10 for the general public. In addition we are encouraging people to bring supplies such as clothing non perishable food items and hygiene products. Press passes will be given out on on the dayof upon previous confirmation.
